I’ve noticed that people keep secret stuff in shoeboxes: valuables, vices and momentos.

I think that’s a good observation. People like to save things that are important to them. They are particularly pleased with things they can hold in their hands. It’s a comfort. Since our feet are bigger than our hands, it makes sense that a shoe box would hold many things that fit in our hand. At least, that’s how I see it.
