Lorde on Fear

“Afraid is a country where they issue us passports at birth and hope we never seek citizenship in any other country. ” Audre Lorde

I love this quote. I interpret it this way: From the moment you start to feel fear and buy into it, you limit yourself from experiencing people, places and things. You make your world smaller.

Having worked with children of all ages for the past 20 years, I know we are not born with fear, we learn it. Being aware of our fears and working to overcome them is at once the definition of growing and yet, staying “young.”

Presents

A student made this for me a long time ago.

I mentioned that I love to roller skate. I don’t even remember telling my students that about myself. Teaching is demanding and the parts that I don’t enjoy: “paperwork/grading,” meetings, and (now) wearing a mask while talking all day and handling parent frustrations with online work…are growing.

We just went on break. I intend to refresh. Reflect. Re-energize. I love my job. I have the rest of the year to be better.
