Beloved second born of mine,

Your wit and humor are divine;

Not ceasing to amaze,

Your smile rivals sun’s rays.

You walk with violin and bow,

Sports, parties you’ve had to forego;

Committed to ideals,

You cede an even keel.

As we trod this life of unknowns,

Your sense of justice are loud sones;

Ignorant peers bemoan,

Your rationale full grown.

My nerves and heart are overwrought,

On those occasions when I thought,

My love -passion – crested,

Stern words manifested.

Although the moon may wax and wane,

Effort and ache are not in vain;

Their eyes – of not import,

Your own dreams you must court.

When Your Past Comes Back to…

We were walking on our daughter’s high school campus during Open House. The schedule was set up as a truncated school day: we were to follow the students’ schedules and meet each teacher for six minutes. We were given five minutes between each class. Willey and I were a bit overwhelmed and we realized how Josie  (our first high school child)  must have felt on her first day: the buildings so far apart, the time to get to each so limited. It was also over 100 degrees outside, even though it was 6pm.

“Mrs. Chung-Wipff?”

I turned around. I didn’t see anyone I recognized. A petite “helper” student walked toward me. (The high school had arranged to have some juniors and seniors assist parents). I searched the girl’s face. And suddenly, I recognized her. Same cute nose and adorable freckles.

I taught Taryn second and third grade. It was the only time I looped in teaching, carrying my entire class over to a second year. It was over eight years ago. When I said goodbye to that class, it felt like I was saying goodbye to my own children. One girl, Taryn, was moving to Utah. She had an angel face and greeted me every day with an enormous smile and the best attitude! She – and the others – made me a better teacher. She and I wept together on the last day of school. I was surprised at the amount of emotion we had. I was going to miss her so much!

And here she was!

I can’t believe she remembers me, I thought. As if she could read my mind, she said, “I can’t believe you remember me, after teaching so many kids!”

No matter what your profession, you must realize that your kindness, love and attention mean the world to someone in your life. It can affect others for years to come, you just never know.

She adorned herself with auroral acquisitions

brooding to be the best bauble

disguising her diffidence

with an utter lack of resistance

Presented with provocation

she balanced the benefits of the bestowal band

affronts, abuse and anger were abysmal

but the lust for love

My Illustrator is busy with school and violin. I’m teaching myself to draw. Be kind.

A Banner Teen Day

My daughter gave me not one – but TWO – compliments today. Usually, she snottily asks me what happened to my hair, or why am I wearing “those ugly shoes,” or she offers to help me with my very sad eyebrows.

But today, she:

  1. asked to wear one of my shirts to school tomorrow (!) and
  2. asked me why I wear big shorts when I have such nice legs (!)

I know this appearance thing is a phase. I try to not get irked too much when I see her taking her 99th selfie or when she practices her smile and picture poses over and over again. But I worry when I see old men ogling at her at the grocery store. She’s fourteen! I want to scream at them. My friend does scream that at dirty old men who look at her step daughter that way. Maybe we all need to scream it.

Another friend of mine (who has been through numerous miscarriages and a stillbirth), told me she turned to her husband the other day and asked,

“Remember when I just worried about being pretty?”

I exercise every day. I used to workout in order to look good. Now, I do it to FEEL good. Having daughters, I am keenly aware that they are watching me. Telling them that being strong is one thing, but showing them is entirely another.

Gifts

I came home today, opened my mail, and I got… this!

My cousin Jennifer reads my blog and she purchased this book for me after learning that I love Maangchi!

What a wonderful, generous gesture.

What if we all did something nice for someone every day? Wouldn’t it be a better world?

I am going to pay it forward by cooking some dishes and having friends over. As soon as my cousin can make her way to Arizona, she and her family will sit down at my table and enjoy the fruits of my mad Korean cooking skills.

It’s OK

We all ought to be more like dogs, if we want to live joyful lives and be good people.

“I can’t walk you this morning, I’m running late.”

“It’s OK.”

I’ll just do Down Dog, then.

“You will have to be all alone today, for 9 hours. I’m sorry.”

“It’s OK.”

I’ll take a nap.

“We ran out of your favorite treats, so no treats for you today.”

“It’s OK. I can still rub my back on the carpet and meditate.”

I love this rug.

The Bad News and the Good News

There’s a lot of bad news out there. The splash page of CNN.com, MSNBC.com and NYTimes.com read like the eve of Armageddon.

But there is also a lot of good news. News you don’t hear. Somebody rescued a dog today. Another person volunteered at a soup kitchen. Several students volunteered at a school and welcomed new students, serving them pizza today.

There is a lot of good out there.

And the BEST news:  YOU have control of what you read and hear and DO.

Don’t watch the news. Don’t read it.

Make it.

Surround yourself with positive people. And help someone today.

Come! Impropriety reigns

Spouse and children have left

oh fleeting moment of depravity (!)

shall we imbibe spirits? Cuddle on the couch?

You invade my thoughts all day

incompartible, inutterable desire!

unattached companions are baffled

their tastes run contrary

Ah! You play hard-to-get!

Your presence is fleeting

My tall, dark and silent one

we bid adieu until the next occasion

hauls the rest of the motley crew away

and quietude – sweet serenity – alights

What If….

What if you added this to today’s goals:

“….with presence and care.”

For example, “Today, I will attend present at the sales meeting with presence and care.

Or,

“I will work with my subcontractors to complete this project with presence and care.”

I believe you will see a difference in how your day goes, for the better.

My daughter Josie (often the illustrator for my blog), created this clay dog tonight with presence and care.
